Young Storytellers Lab

Young Storytellers Lab (YSL) and Theatre for English Language Learners (The Tell Project) focuses on the art and skills of storytelling.

The TELL Project uses engaging theatre games and creative activities to help students build their vocabulary.

Students will create their own material and participate in the staging of their work. This work includes text, voice, movement, and sound. Writing in small groups, the class creates a set of 3-4 scenes that will be woven together with the assistance of the teaching artist to create an adaptation or a response to a text. We use a rehearsal process that practices the play they created, and we consider the positioning of the audience.

Residencies run 4-8 weeks, depending on the needs of the classroom and the goals of the residency.

Students can:

  • Write their own monologues based on an idea of theirs
  • Write an adaptation from a unit/book reflecting the thoughts of a character or situation from the text in the form of a monologue
  • Write a response to a reading in the form of a monologue
