The Young Playwright's Initiative

“Fantastic…It would not be an overestimation to say that the Playwright’s Project was one of the highlights of my teaching
career at Saratoga High. I have rarely seen all of the students
so engaged and happy to work hard.”

Kathleen Woods, Drama Teacher, Saratoga High School

Using a curriculum created by TheatreWorks and local playwright Cherylene Lee, Student Speak:The Playwright’s Project is a two month residency which begins with the basics of playwriting and ends with each student having completed a one act play. During 12 class sessions over the first 4 weeks, our Playwright-in-Residence works with one class to create characters, conflict, and situations which then become the basis for students’ plays. At the end of four weeks, 6-8 plays are chosen for further mentoring over another 12 sessions. They are then produced and performed in an evening of staged readings by local actors and directors. This highly successful, in-depth and professional playwriting instruction for high school students gives a voice and professional resources to emerging young writers in our community.

Past Playwrights-in-Residence include Cherylene Lee, and Prince Gomolvilas.
